President Mahama to Launch Ghana Labour Export Programme to Tackle Youth Unemployment

AHAFOMAN | June 1, 2025 — President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will soon launch the Ghana Labour Export Programme, aimed at creating sustainable job opportunities for Ghana’s youth through international labour partnerships.
The announcement was made on Saturday, May 31, during the President’s Thank You tour in the Ahafo Region.
President Mahama revealed that advanced negotiations are ongoing with several countries experiencing labour shortages, with the goal of deploying Ghanaian professionals on fixed-term employment contracts abroad.
“We will soon launch the Ghana Labour Export Programme. There are labour shortages in many countries across the world. We are negotiating with several of those countries to export some of our professionals to work on fixed-term contracts abroad,” he stated.
According to the President, the programme will span multiple sectors, including agriculture, construction, health, hospitality, and logistics. Targeted job roles will include electricians, welders, mechanics, nurses, chefs, caterers, drivers, warehouse supervisors, and machine operators.
President Mahama further disclosed that a contract has already been signed with one country for the export of 2,000 temporary workers as part of the initial rollout. He emphasised that regional balance and fairness will guide the selection process.
“Young qualified people will be selected fairly from all the 16 regions of our country, including Ahafo,” he assured.
The Ghana Labour Export Programme is part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce youth unemployment, boost foreign remittances, and strengthen Ghana’s international labour diplomacy.
The initiative has already begun to generate national interest, with many citizens viewing it as a practical step toward addressing the country’s rising joblessness among skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Further details, including application procedures, eligibility requirements, and participating countries, are expected to be released during the official programme launch.
