ACCRA, June 1, 2025 — The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has ordered a sweeping crackdown on illegal mining activities (galamsey) across the Western, Ashanti, and Central Regions, leading to the arrest of 38 suspects in high-risk areas notorious for environmental destruction.
The operations, which commenced earlier this week, targeted illegal mining sites dangerously situated within residential zones, near schools, and along major highways.
Key Arrests and Operations:
- Western Region – Huniso:
13 suspects were arrested during a coordinated operation and remanded by the Tarkwa Circuit Court. They are scheduled to reappear on June 6, 2025. - Ashanti Region – Akrokerri (Obuasi area):
A police team led by ACP Joseph Nyaaba apprehended nine individuals operating illegal mining just 200 metres from Asare Bediako SHS, with some using explosives that damaged school infrastructure. - Central Region – Dunkwa-On-Offin:
On May 29, Superintendent David Ashong and ASP Emmanuel Bruce led a team of 20 officers to the banks of the River Offin, arresting Samuel Ankamah and Daniel Agyeman, who were operating excavators. - Western Region – Wassa Dadieso and Wassa Gyapa:
A large contingent of 82 officers, led by Chief Superintendent William Jabialu, stormed illegal sites where deep mining pits posed risks to nearby homes and roads.
At Wassa Gyapa, police destroyed over 135 chanfan machines, impounded a motorbike, and arrested six more suspects, despite severe muddy terrain.

All suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with investigations. Charges are expected to be filed in the coming days.

The police say these operations are part of a sustained national strategy to curb illegal mining and its devastating environmental impacts, including deforestation, water pollution, and public safety risks.
Further operations are being planned across the country in what the IGP has called a zero-tolerance approach to galamsey.
