New Jurors Join Court Proceedings Amid Ongoing Strike Over Unpaid Allowances

ACCRA – June 4, 2025 — Some newly recruited jurors have begun participating in proceedings at Criminal Court 1 of the High Court in Accra, despite an ongoing strike by senior jurors over eight months of unpaid allowances, Citi News has confirmed.
According to court sources, the new jurors, engaged less than a month ago, were brought in to bolster the jury panel and help bridge operational gaps in the judicial system. On Tuesday, June 3, they were present for the high-profile murder case involving the alleged killing of two children in Abesim, in the Bono Region, back in 2021.
Ongoing Strike by Senior Jurors
The development follows an official withdrawal of services by long-serving jurors on Monday, June 2, in protest over unpaid allowances dating back eight months. The group, through multiple formal requests, has sought resolution from judicial authorities, including the Acting Chief Justice, but say no meaningful commitment has been made.
In an interview with Citi News, striking juror Joshua Alorgbey expressed deep dissatisfaction with how the situation is being handled.
“Because they know what they are doing, while recruiting new jurors secretly from us, they separated them from our main platform so they wouldn’t know the reality of what is happening at the court,” Alorgbey said.
He added that the new jurors are becoming increasingly concerned, questioning whether they too will face delayed payments.
“You cannot be coming there with your own money. So the new jurors, as we speak now, we will hear from them also. The treatment they are giving us is very unfair,” he stressed.
Judiciary Yet to Respond
The Judicial Service is yet to issue an official statement regarding both the arrears owed and the ongoing strike, which threatens to stall several major criminal trials.
Legal analysts warn that unless the issue is resolved swiftly, it could compromise the delivery of justice in critical cases and deepen mistrust among court personnel.
