Justice Dzamefe Advocates AI and Digital Transformation for Ghana’s Judiciary

Accra, June 17, 2025 — Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has called for a sweeping technological transformation within Ghana’s judicial system, emphasizing the need for artificial intelligence, real-time digital transcription, and virtual courtrooms to replace the current manual operations that, he argues, are outdated and inefficient.

Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, Justice Dzamefe did not mince words about the urgent need for reform.

“We must go with technology. The time of long handwriting is long gone past,” he stated.

He proposed the deployment of AI-powered tools, including voice recording systems and automated transcription software, to ensure that court records are instantly available at the end of each day’s proceedings — a move he says will drastically enhance the efficiency and transparency of the justice system.

“By the end of the day, once the court is done sitting, the records are ready,” he said.
“We also need to go virtual, so people can testify online. We must be abreast with time, otherwise we will be left out.”

His remarks echo broader calls from civil society and legal professionals who have long cited case backlogs, delayed judgments, and limited rural access to justice as major failings of Ghana’s judiciary.

Justice Dzamefe’s tech-forward stance reflects lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many countries integrated remote hearings and digital case management into standard court operations.

If approved by Parliament, Dzamefe’s appointment could inject fresh momentum into long-stalled reform efforts and position him as a leading voice in digitising justice delivery in Ghana.
