Justice Dzamefe Advocates Asset Declaration for Judges, Citing Constitutional Mandate

Accra, June 17, 2025 — Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe has strongly advocated for equal accountability across all arms of government, insisting that judges must declare their assets just like any other public official.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, the Appeals Court judge stated that the judiciary should not be exempt from the asset declaration provisions outlined in the 1992 Constitution.

“If the law says all government appointees should declare their assets, and judges are government appointees, why not? They have to declare their assets,” he said.

Justice Dzamefe confirmed his compliance with the rule when asked directly by the committee.

“Yes, Mr. Chairman,” he responded when asked if he had declared his assets.

His firm position comes amid mounting public and civil society pressure for greater transparency and accountability in the judiciary, an institution often perceived as insulated from scrutiny.

Justice Dzamefe’s remarks align with growing advocacy from legal reform bodies and anti-corruption watchdogs who argue that asset declaration by judges is essential to promoting ethical conduct and minimizing conflicts of interest within the justice system.

The nominee’s vetting is part of a broader process to fill vacancies on the Supreme Court, following the appointment of seven new justices by President John Dramani Mahama on April 30, 2025.

The call for increased transparency in the judiciary follows heightened public interest in how senior judicial figures are appointed and held accountable. Observers note that Dzamefe’s public endorsement of asset declaration may set a strong precedent for future judicial reforms.
