Bole Health Centre in Ruins: Patients Forced to Use Bushes Amid Leaking Roofs and Collapsing Toilets

Bole, Savannah Region – June 18, 2025 — The Bole Health Centre, a once-reliable medical facility serving residents in the Savannah Region for over three decades, is now teetering on collapse—raising grave concerns over a looming public health crisis.
The facility’s clay roofing sheets leak heavily, forcing patients and staff to flee into nearby schools or homes during storms. During a recent downpour, Adom News reporters witnessed both patients and staff huddled under trees as parts of the roof gave way to rainwater.
Equally alarming is the state of the toilet facilities—only two exist, one for males and one for females, but both are now unsafe and near collapse. Locals say the manholes underneath the toilets are open and dangerous, prompting patients to defecate in surrounding bushes.
“We’re afraid we’ll fall in. It’s better to go to the bush than die in a toilet,” lamented Hawa Ayembe, a patient who spoke to Adom News. She appealed directly to authorities to construct new toilet facilities to preserve both dignity and sanitation.
Labour Ward in Crisis
The maternity section of the centre is severely under-resourced, with just one delivery bed available for up to five deliveries daily. Healthcare workers are forced to improvise during multiple childbirths, often without basic medical tools or adequate privacy.
Calls for Urgent Intervention
Health workers—speaking anonymously—disclosed that they abandon the health centre during heavy rainfall due to the pervasive leakage and risk of electrical faults. Many also voiced frustrations over lack of funding, government attention, and structural support.
They are appealing to:
- The Bole District Assembly
- The Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, Hon. Yussif Sulemana, who also serves as Minister for Lands and Natural Resources
“This centre can no longer provide safe care. We need the government to act before we have an outbreak,” a staff member noted.
Community Health at Risk
The deteriorating state of the Bole Health Centre comes at a time when rural healthcare infrastructure is under scrutiny nationwide. Without urgent renovation and supply of basic equipment, the facility risks closure—leaving thousands without access to essential health services.
