Ken Ofori-Atta Undergoes Successful Prostate Cancer Surgery Amid Legal Turmoil

Rochester, Minnesota | June 17, 2025 — Ghana’s former Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has successfully undergone surgery for prostate cancer at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

The procedure, a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, took place on Friday, June 13, 2025, and lasted over four hours. In a statement issued by his wife, Prof. Angela Ofori-Atta, the family disclosed that the surgical team was pleased with the outcome and has placed Mr. Ofori-Atta on a structured postoperative care regime.

Prof. Ofori-Atta described the period as emotionally and physically taxing, especially as it coincided with a red alert issued against her husband by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

“Kenneth has always been resilient. But this has been very difficult; with the OSP choosing the period just before his surgery to declare a red alert on him,” she stated.

She expressed gratitude to the many Ghanaians, pastors, and well-wishers who have offered prayers and support during this challenging time.

Background: Legal Challenges Back Home

While undergoing medical treatment abroad, Mr. Ofori-Atta has faced multiple legal investigations initiated by the OSP into his tenure as Finance Minister (2017–2024).

In January 2025, he was officially named as a suspect in five high-profile cases:

  1. Petroleum and Minerals Revenue Assurance: Involving contracts between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
  2. ECG Termination Deal: Linked to the abrupt cancellation of a tech contract with Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC).
  3. National Cathedral Procurement: Probing into contract procedures and financing of the controversial religious project.
  4. Ambulance Procurement Case: Involving Service Ghana Auto Group Limited and the Ministry of Health.
  5. GRA Tax P-Fund Mismanagement: Scrutinising disbursements and oversight lapses regarding the Tax P-Fund Account.

Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team responded to the summons with a medical excuse, but the OSP rejected it for lacking specifics. He was later declared a fugitive on February 12, 2025, with a Red Notice issued via INTERPOL. His lawyers subsequently provided a return timeline in May 2025, prompting a withdrawal of the “wanted” status.

In March 2025, he filed a lawsuit against the OSP seeking damages and removal of “fugitive” references from official records and social media.

Despite ongoing litigation, the OSP renewed its Red Notice, citing lack of certified medical evidence, which the Ofori-Atta family has since challenged at INTERPOL’s Commission for the Control of Files, claiming the move ignored his legitimate medical condition.

Ken Ofori-Atta, a former investment banker, played a pivotal role in Ghana’s economic reform efforts, including IMF negotiations, and was a key figure in the Akufo-Addo administration. His recent health battle and legal saga have stirred public debate over transparency, due process, and political accountability.
