Bryan Acheampong: AI Can Make Agriculture a Youth-Driven Industry in Ghana

Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has highlighted the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modernising Ghana’s agriculture sector and making it more attractive to the youth.
Speaking at a public lecture themed “AI Disruptions and the Future of Work: Readiness of Our Youth” in Accra on Thursday, June 26, 2025, Dr. Acheampong said AI tools such as disease diagnostics, precision farming, and market prediction systems could move agriculture from traditional subsistence methods to a data-driven, youth-friendly industry.
“If adopted to scale, they can transform agriculture from a subsistence activity into a data-driven, youth-attractive economic engine,” he stated.
The event was held at the University of Media, Arts, and Communications – Institute of Journalism (UNIMAC-IJ) and brought together academics, policymakers, and students to discuss the impact of AI on Ghana’s labour future.
Dr. Acheampong also underscored the critical role of digital skills in realising this vision. He commended the government’s initiative to train one million coders, calling it a pivotal step in Ghana’s digital advancement.
“The current government is pushing a one million coders programme. If they succeed in implementing it well, it could be good for the country,” he noted.
Addressing common fears about AI replacing jobs, the former minister emphasized that AI should be viewed as a tool that redefines work rather than eliminates it. “AI will reshape existing roles while maintaining the central value of human input,” he affirmed.
He further called for the development of national AI policies, targeted investments, and educational reforms to equip Ghanaian youth with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven economy.
