COVID-19 Outbreak Confirmed at University of Ghana — GHS Urges Public Vigilance

Accra, June 26, 2025 — The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed a resurgence of COVID-19 cases within the University of Ghana community, sparking renewed calls for adherence to health protocols.

According to a statement issued Wednesday, the outbreak is currently limited to the university campus, and all reported cases are mild, with no hospital admissions recorded. The GHS says it is working closely with university authorities to contain the spread and strengthen ongoing response measures.

“GHS is actively collaborating with the University authorities to contain the outbreak and review measures in response to the evolving situation,” the statement read.

Although the World Health Organisation no longer considers COVID-19 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, the GHS stressed that the pandemic is not over, warning that sporadic and seasonal outbreaks are still possible globally.

Surveillance and Monitoring

The GHS, together with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), continues to monitor influenza and COVID-19 trends nationwide as part of routine public health surveillance across all 16 regions.

Public Health Advisory

The public is being reminded to continue observing key preventive measures:

  • Maintain physical distancing
  • Wear face masks in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer
  • Stay home and self-isolate when unwell
  • Avoid large gatherings
  • Seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or loss of taste/smell

Despite the localised nature of the outbreak, the GHS emphasised the importance of continued vigilance, personal responsibility, and basic hygiene practices to prevent further spread.

Assurance to the Public

The Ministry of Health, through the GHS, assured the university community and the general public that comprehensive containment measures are in place and the situation is being closely monitored.
