GRNMA Slams Health Committee Over Delayed Meeting, Warns of Possible Strike Resumption

Accra, June 26, 2025 — The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has expressed strong disappointment in the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, accusing it of breaching an agreed roadmap aimed at resolving key issues concerning the implementation of revised conditions of service for nurses and midwives.
At a press conference held in Accra on Thursday, GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo criticised the Committee for unilaterally rescheduling a crucial stakeholder meeting from June 26 to July 10, citing the unavailability of some stakeholders currently out of the country.
“The rescheduling of the meeting in our view is in bad faith, since it may further delay the implementation of the agreed items,” Mrs. Ofori-Ampofo said. “We demand the implementation of the four agreed-upon items not later than July 2025. This is non-negotiable.”
Four Key Issues at Stake
The rescheduled meeting was expected to address four key items in a revised collective agreement between GRNMA and the government. These items formed the basis for the suspension of a nationwide strike earlier this month by the Association, based on assurances from the Health Committee that concrete action would follow.
However, the GRNMA now fears the delay could jeopardise implementation timelines and undermine trust in the process.
“We have decided to give the Committee the benefit of the doubt and still trust that their engagement with the Ministries of Health and Finance would be productive,” the GRNMA President added.
Strike Threat Still on the Table
Mrs. Ofori-Ampofo warned that if the implementation timeline is not met by the end of July 2025, the Association may be forced to resume its industrial action, describing the delay as an affront to the respect and dignity of nurses and midwives nationwide.
“We urge government to show greater seriousness and respect for the nursing and midwifery profession,” she stated, calling for swift action to avoid renewed labour unrest in the healthcare sector.
