MP Ntim Fordjour Slams Viral LGBTQ+ Photos at Independence Arch, Blames Mahama and NDC

Accra, June 26, 2025 — Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has fiercely condemned viral images of a same-sex couple kissing beneath Ghana’s iconic Independence Arch, branding it an affront to Ghanaian cultural values and national pride.
In a Twitter post published at 8:24 a.m. on Thursday, Rev. Fordjour described the act as a “desecration of national monuments”, linking it to what he called a decline in moral standards under former President John Dramani Mahama and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Under Mahama & NDC, foreign gay couple boldly desecrate our national monuments: kiss under Independence Square, flaunting Ghana flag. They’re emboldened to defy the dignity and sanctity of our rich Ghanaian values right before our eyes,” he posted.
The images in question, shared by South African LGBTQ+ couple Lue and Rue, were part of their #ShowGhanaLove campaign—a protest against Ghana’s proposed anti-LGBTQ+ bill. The photos, which also feature Ghana’s national flag, were taken at highly symbolic national landmarks, including the Independence Arch in Accra.
However, their public display has drawn heavy criticism online, with many Ghanaians condemning the act as disrespectful to the nation’s cultural heritage, especially in a society that broadly disapproves of same-sex relationships.
Rev. Fordjour, a known advocate of Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ legislation currently under review in Parliament, used the opportunity to call for swift passage of the bill to protect what he described as the “dignity and sanctity” of Ghanaian values.
“We shall end this absurdity with the bill,” he added.
The incident has reignited national debate around LGBTQ+ rights, freedom of expression, and the cultural boundaries of protest in Ghana. The proposed anti-LGBTQ+ bill, which seeks to criminalize same-sex relationships and associated advocacy, remains one of the most hotly contested issues before Parliament.
Meanwhile, supporters of LGBTQ+ rights have defended Lue and Rue’s actions as peaceful activism aimed at promoting love and inclusion, challenging laws they say endanger the lives and rights of sexual minorities in Ghana.
