Accra, June 26, 2025 — The Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Ghana, Professor Rosina Kyeremanten, has clarified that the university’s recent suspension of social gatherings does not extend to academic lectures.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday morning, Prof. Kyeremanten addressed concerns sparked by the directive, assuring the university community that lectures will continue as scheduled under existing health and safety protocols.
“Lectures are not social gatherings,” she stressed. “In a lecture room, you do not have students shouting and shouting. But when you have a concert, like an artiste night, you will have students shouting and jumping. That is a more dangerous situation than sitting in a lecture room.”
She explained that the controlled and structured nature of lectures—where primarily the lecturer speaks—differs significantly from concerts, hall weeks, or other events the directive targets, which involve larger crowds and high-energy activity.
The suspension, announced earlier this week, is aimed at curbing the spread of infectious diseases amid health concerns on campus. It covers artiste nights, hall week celebrations, and other large-scale social events, but does not include academic sessions.
Prof. Kyeremanten further noted that the university is committed to enforcing safety protocols within lecture halls to protect students and staff. These include mandatory face mask use and efforts to maintain social distancing as much as possible.
Her comments are expected to bring clarity and calm among students who were concerned that the directive might affect ongoing academic activities.
