Bawumia Condemns Violence at Ablekuma North Rerun, Calls for Swift Action

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 presidential election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly condemned the violent incidents that marred the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency on Friday, July 11, describing the chaos as a grave threat to Ghana’s democratic stability.
Responding to reports of physical assaults and disruptions—including the attack on former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson—Dr. Bawumia expressed deep concern over the growing trend of political violence during elections.
“This will be a recipe for disaster if each political party will raise its own army,” Dr. Bawumia warned, cautioning against the normalization of such violent tactics in Ghana’s political space.
He further called on President John Mahama to ensure that those responsible for Friday’s attacks are swiftly identified and brought to justice.
“I call on the President to take action to bring the perpetrators to book,” he stated firmly.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that the violent scenes witnessed during the rerun must not be ignored, noting that both the NPP and the broader Ghanaian public will hold onto the memories of what transpired.
“We will not forget what has happened. This is not the democracy we want to see,” he emphasized.
His remarks add to mounting pressure on state authorities to address the incidents after thugs reportedly stormed polling centres, disrupted voting, and attacked political actors and media personnel.
Electoral observers, civil society groups, and political stakeholders have since urged the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service to act decisively to restore public confidence in the country’s democratic processes.
