Chaos Erupts at Ablekuma North Rerun as Macho Men Storm Polling Centre; NPP Candidate and Former Minister Assaulted

Tensions reached a boiling point during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025, after a group of unidentified macho men stormed the St. Peter’s polling centre, causing widespread chaos and disrupting the voting process.
According to Channel One News reporter Jude Duncan, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, was severely assaulted during the incident. Former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hawa Koomson, also reportedly fell victim to the attacks by the group.
Eyewitnesses described the invasion as highly coordinated, with the men arriving in a planned manner that triggered panic among voters and electoral officials. The sudden chaos forced a temporary suspension of the voting process, as security personnel struggled to restore order.

Despite heightened security arrangements across the 19 polling stations involved in the rerun, police on the ground were unable to prevent the attack or maintain control during the crucial moments of the incident.
The rerun itself was organised by the Electoral Commission (EC) to resolve a prolonged electoral dispute stemming from the December 7, 2024, general elections. The constituency has been without parliamentary representation since then, prompting the fresh vote to ensure the seat is duly filled.
Political tensions had already been high ahead of the rerun, with the NPP officially boycotting the exercise over concerns about the EC’s decision. However, their candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, broke ranks with the party and has been actively participating in the contest—adding another layer of drama to the tense polls.
The latest violent incident has heightened fears over electoral security and raised questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement in protecting voters, candidates, and election officials.
No official statement has been issued by the Ghana Police Service or the Electoral Commission regarding the violent disruption.
