NDC Secures Historic Victory in Ablekuma North as Ewurabena Aubynn Wins Parliamentary Rerun

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured a historic win in the Ablekuma North Constituency, with Ewurabena Aubynn emerging victorious in the closely watched parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
This marks the second time since 1992 that the governing party has claimed the traditionally New Patriotic Party (NPP)-held seat, breaking years of political dominance by the opposition party in the area.
The rerun, conducted across 19 polling stations, brought finality to months of legal and electoral disputes following the contentious December 7, 2024 general election.
After Friday’s vote, Ewurabena Aubynn polled 34,090 votes, narrowly edging out the NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who garnered 33,881 votes.
Chronology of Events
In the aftermath of the December elections, both the NPP and NDC laid claim to victory. The NPP insisted their candidate had won with a margin of 414 votes. However, disputes over unauthenticated pink sheets from 19 polling stations led the Electoral Commission (EC) to suspend final declaration of the results.
A High Court ruling in January 2025 directed the EC to resume collation, but the process stalled again due to unresolved discrepancies and missing signatures. Eventually, the EC opted for a partial rerun in the affected polling stations.
The NPP leadership rejected the decision and announced a boycott, describing it as a betrayal of electoral justice. Nonetheless, in a dramatic move, Nana Akua Afriyie defied her party’s directive and re-entered the race, gaining quiet but growing support from grassroots members and prominent party figures.
Tense Campaign and Chaotic Election Day
In the lead-up to the rerun, political tension ran high. The NDC, led by national and regional figures, launched an aggressive campaign, positioning Ewurabena Aubynn as a symbol of change and accountability, particularly appealing to youth and floating voters.
Election day was marred by violence and disruptions. Unidentified individuals stormed at least one polling station, leading to physical attacks on both Nana Akua Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson. Separately, a police officer was caught on video assaulting a journalist, prompting his interdiction by the Ghana Police Service.
Despite these incidents, voting proceeded across all 19 stations and ended peacefully in most locations.
A Stunning Blow to an NPP Stronghold
Ablekuma North has consistently been one of the NPP’s safest seats, with the party winning there in every election since the constituency’s creation. The outcome of this rerun represents a major upset and a significant shift in the Greater Accra Region’s political landscape, where several formerly safe seats are now increasingly competitive.
Political analysts attribute the NPP’s defeat to internal divisions, unclear signals over participation in the rerun, and the violence that marred election day—factors that may have alienated some voters.
Looking Ahead
Ewurabena Aubynn’s win delivers more than just a morale boost for the NDC in Parliament—it also changes the tone of the political conversation heading into the 2028 general election. Her victory underscores the NDC’s growing momentum in urban and peri-urban constituencies, particularly in the Greater Accra Region.
With nearly eight months of political limbo now resolved, Ablekuma North has a new representative in Parliament, and Ghana’s democracy records another turning point.
