Voting Underway in Ablekuma North as EC Holds Parliamentary Rerun in 19 Polling Stations

Voting is currently underway in the Ablekuma North constituency, where the Electoral Commission (EC) is conducting a crucial parliamentary rerun across 19 polling stations.

The exercise, taking place today, Friday, July 11, 2025, aims to settle lingering disputes arising from the December 7, 2024, general elections.

The rerun was triggered by widespread concerns regarding the credibility of results from several polling stations. Legal challenges and discrepancies—particularly involving unauthenticated pink sheets—led the EC to organize fresh voting to uphold fairness, transparency, and constitutional integrity.

Despite the EC’s position, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has fiercely opposed the rerun, describing it as “unjust” and accusing the Commission of disregarding a High Court directive, which had called for the collation and declaration of results from the outstanding polling stations.

In protest, the NPP announced a boycott of the rerun and sought to block the process through legal and administrative means. However, their efforts were dismissed by the courts.

In an unexpected twist, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, defied her party’s directive and confirmed her participation in the rerun. Her decision has sparked mixed reactions within the NPP, although some local executives and Members of Parliament have thrown their support behind her and joined her campaign in the constituency.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, July 10, the EC’s Deputy Chairman for Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to ensuring a credible election process. He rejected allegations of political interference or bias, emphasizing the EC’s independence.

“On our part as the electoral management body, we are desirous of bringing the election in the Ablekuma North constituency to a conclusion and to ensure that the constituents have a representative in Parliament,” Dr. Asare stated.

He added, “We assure the public and the political parties that, as always, we will live by our motto and ensure that the rerun is fair, transparent, and credible.”

Security has been intensified at all affected polling stations, with EC officials and independent observers deployed to guarantee a smooth and peaceful voting process.

The outcome of the rerun will determine whether the NPP maintains its grip on the Ablekuma North seat or if the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), represented by Ewurabena Aubynn, can seize the constituency.
