Interior Minister Condemns Ablekuma North Rerun Violence, Vows Swift Justice for Perpetrators

Interior Minister Mubarak Muntaka has issued a firm condemnation of the violence that marred the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North on Friday, July 11, 2025, pledging that all those involved—regardless of political ties—will face the full force of the law.
The rerun, which covered 19 polling stations, was interrupted when a group of unidentified macho men violently stormed the St. Peter’s Polling Centre, temporarily halting the process. Among the victims of the assault was former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.
Speaking to journalists in Accra on Monday, July 14, Minister Muntaka stressed that the government under President John Dramani Mahama is determined to uproot electoral violence and vigilantism.
“I can assure you that not my party, not any group, will we sit and allow to see the resurgence of vigilantism,” he stated.
He revealed that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has been formally briefed with video evidence of the attacks and instructed to act swiftly to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.
“We’re not going to condone any actions by individuals within or outside our party going around to do the untoward,” Muntaka added. “We will ensure that under the leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, no such group will be allowed to form.”
Security was heightened after the attack, allowing voting to continue under reinforced protection. The rerun was necessary to resolve disputes from the December 7, 2024, general elections, which left the constituency without representation in Parliament due to irregularities and the destruction of collation documents.
In a tightly contested rerun, the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn emerged victorious over the NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie, securing the constituency’s representation in the 9th Parliament after over six months of vacancy.
