The Ministry of Health has confirmed the disbursement of GH₵462 million to support nursing trainee allowances for 120,000 students across the country, covering a six-month period. This fulfills a major campaign promise by President John Dramani Mahama and reflects the government’s continued effort to invest in Ghana’s health sector workforce.

  • Amount Disbursed: GH₵462 million
  • Beneficiaries: 120,000 nursing trainees
  • Duration Covered: Six months

In a press release on Thursday, July 17, the Ministry said the initiative is part of a broader agenda to provide financial relief to students in Nurses Training Colleges and bolster morale among future health professionals.

“The allowance was a key commitment made by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama during the recent electioneering campaign and has now been fulfilled,” the Ministry stated.

Impact and Future Commitment

The Ministry described the move as a critical intervention for enhancing student welfare and ensuring sustained motivation within the nursing profession. It added that this investment is strategically aligned with long-term goals to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system through the development of essential human capital.

The Ministry also expressed gratitude to President Mahama for keeping his promise, as well as to the various stakeholders who facilitated the timely release and distribution of the funds.

“This development is a significant step in improving the welfare of nursing trainees… It aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen the health sector by ensuring critical human resources receive the needed support.”

Assurance of Continued Support

Reaffirming its commitment to healthcare education, the Ministry pledged to work closely with nursing institutions across Ghana to maintain high standards of training and to ensure consistent support for trainees.

This disbursement brings relief to thousands of students, many of whom have long advocated for regular and predictable financial aid during their education. It is expected to ease the financial burden on students and their families while encouraging more young Ghanaians to consider careers in nursing and midwifery.
