Kwesi Pratt Jnr. Accuses Zelenskyy of Undermining Ghana’s Non-Aligned Foreign Policy

Renowned Pan-Africanist and veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has launched a scathing critique of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accusing him of attempting to undermine Ghana’s Non-Aligned foreign policy championed by the country’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
In an article published in The Insight on Thursday, July 17, 2025, and also shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Mr. Pratt warned that Ghanaians must not allow what he called a “desperate Zelenskyy” to draw Ghana into global conflicts.
Allegations of Interference
Pratt claimed that Zelenskyy had personally called President John Dramani Mahama, seeking to revive agreements made with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. According to Pratt, the Ukrainian president reported details of that private conversation publicly on his X page—an act he described as a deliberate attempt to drag Ghana into Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia.
He noted that, unlike Akufo-Addo, President Mahama has maintained a neutral stance on international conflicts, consistently advocating for ceasefire and peaceful settlements in both the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine conflicts.
Drone Funding and Border Security Concerns
Zelenskyy reportedly stated that Ghana is interested in Ukrainian technology and drone production and is ready to finance such efforts—a claim that sparked outrage from Mr. Pratt.
He questioned the logic behind Ghana supporting drone manufacturing in Ukraine while struggling with severe economic constraints, including a US$3.7 billion power sector debt and widespread austerity measures.
“Why should Ghana, in its current economic state, finance drones for Ukraine?” he asked. “It defies common sense.”
Even more troubling, he said, was Zelenskyy’s suggestion that Ukraine would help Ghana secure its borders—a comment Pratt argued was both alarming and misleading.
“Secure our borders from whom?” he asked, claiming that Ukraine’s own involvement in the Sahel region may be fueling instability in neighbouring countries like Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. He questioned how these nations could trust Ghana as a neutral party if it’s perceived to be arming their enemies.
Economic Misalignment and Diplomatic Risks
Pratt also cast doubt on Ukraine’s proposed agro-industrial partnership and a food logistics hub in Ghana, dismissing it as impractical coming from a country “begging for aid” while unable to solve its own problems.
Citing figures, he stated that Ukraine has received approximately US$280 billion in international aid over the past three years—including nearly US$200 billion from the U.S. in military support alone—and is in no position to offer genuine assistance to Ghana.
Media Complicity and Embassy Overreach
The journalist also condemned sections of the Ghanaian media for publishing Zelenskyy’s statements without verifying the facts or seeking clarification from the Presidency. He expressed concern that such uncritical reporting could point to possible manipulation by the Ukrainian Embassy in Ghana.
“This suggests a dangerous overreach—an attempt to influence Ghana’s media space and public opinion,” he said, warning that such interference undermines Ghana’s sovereignty and long-standing commitment to Non-Alignment.
Final Warning
Kwesi Pratt called on the Ghanaian government and citizens to resist any foreign policy direction that could entangle the country in international conflicts, urging vigilance against any efforts to destabilise Ghana’s diplomatic standing in West Africa.
“Zelenskyy must be stopped from exporting the chaos in Ukraine to Ghana,” he concluded. “Ghana must stand firm and safeguard its independence and neutrality.”
