NPP Greater Accra Chairman Defends Bawumia’s Address at Delegates Conference

Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Divine Agorhom, has defended the party’s decision to allow Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 presidential candidate and former Vice President, to address delegates during the just-ended National Delegates Conference held at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday, July 19.

His comments come amid criticism from some party members and presidential hopefuls who alleged unfair treatment, saying they were denied a chance to speak while Dr. Bawumia was granted the platform.

“No Official Aspirants Yet” — Agorhom Explains

In an interview on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Monday, July 21, Agorhom rejected the accusations, insisting the protocol extended to Dr. Bawumia was based on his prior position as Vice President and not favoritism.

“We must put it on record that as we speak now, we have not opened nominations. So, we don’t have any aspirants. We’re all equals… except for the fact that we had a former Vice President in our mix, so we needed to give him that protocol, that respect,” he explained.

“It Was Just a Wave” — No Breach of Fairness

Agorhom clarified that Bawumia’s engagement was limited and ceremonial:

“He walked around to wave at the party people… I don’t see anything wrong with that. The opportunity Bawumia had was to wave… What is the problem with this?”

He urged party members to avoid creating unnecessary tension over what he described as a harmless gesture and focus instead on the broader success of the event.

Background: Focus on Unity and 2028

The National Delegates Conference was organised to:

  • Reinforce party unity,
  • Mobilise grassroots support, and
  • Amend parts of the NPP constitution in preparation for the 2028 general elections.

The controversy surrounding Bawumia’s address underscores the internal tensions and potential rivalry as the NPP moves toward electing its next flagbearer, despite official nominations yet to be opened.
