Thousands of Rounds of Military Ammunition Unaccounted For — Defence Minister Reveals

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has disclosed that thousands of rounds of military ammunition were irregularly transferred from the Ghana Armed Forces to the National Security Secretariat in 2024 — and remain unaccounted for.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, July 21, 2025, Dr. Boamah confirmed the alarming development, stating:
“We have kept our nation safe and stable notwithstanding the irregular transfer of thousands of rounds of military ammunitions in 2024 from the Ghana Armed Forces to the National Security outfit. Ammunitions which have since not been accounted for.”
Lack of Clarity and Details
The Minister did not provide specifics on:
- The exact quantity or type of ammunition involved,
- What constituted the irregularity of the transfer,
- Or whether any investigation had been initiated to trace the missing ammunition.
The revelation raises serious concerns about military oversight, accountability, and the internal security protocols of the state’s armed institutions.
Amid Equipment and Resource Challenges
Dr. Boamah’s disclosure comes as the Ghana Armed Forces face significant operational constraints, including:
- Unserviceable equipment across the Army, Navy, and Air Force,
- An urgent need for retooling and re-equipping to enhance operational capacity.
Despite these setbacks, the Minister assured the public that Ghana remains safe, stable, and peaceful, stressing that the country is poised to enter a “golden age” under the reset agenda of President John Dramani Mahama.
The unaccounted ammunition issue is expected to spark national debate, particularly regarding transparency, national security coordination, and the chain of custody for military-grade weapons.
