Government Clears All Capitation Grant Arrears for Public Basic Schools – GES Confirms

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed that the Government of Ghana has fully settled all outstanding Capitation Grant arrears for public basic schools, covering the period from 2023 to date.
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 23, the GES described the payment as a demonstration of government’s unwavering commitment to strengthening basic education nationwide.
Vital Support for Basic Schools
The Capitation Grant is a key source of operational funding for public basic schools, helping to cover teaching and learning materials, minor infrastructure repairs, and other school-level administrative needs. It also enables greater autonomy for headteachers, allowing them to manage resources efficiently to enhance education delivery.
Commendations Amid Economic Strains
Despite ongoing economic challenges, the GES praised both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for making the Capitation Grant a budgetary priority.
“We urge all school leaders to use the funds responsibly and in line with the guidelines for the utilisation of the Capitation Grant,” the statement emphasized.
Acknowledging Teachers’ Dedication
GES also extended gratitude to school heads and administrators for their resilience and continued dedication to delivering quality education in the face of delays in previous disbursements.
Enhanced Supervision and Accountability
To ensure effective and transparent use of the funds, GES noted that district and regional monitoring teams will step up supervision, helping to guarantee value for money and adherence to spending guidelines.
Commitment to Educational Excellence
GES concluded the release by reiterating its broader commitment to:
- Improving learning outcomes
- Strengthening school governance
- Promoting inclusive, equitable, and quality education for all Ghanaian children
This development is expected to boost school operations as the new academic term progresses, reinforcing the government’s education reform agenda.
