Interior Minister and Asawase MP, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has pledged swift and decisive action following the assassination of Naa Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and Chief of the Kadi Divisional Area in Binduri.

The respected traditional leader was shot dead by unknown assailants at his residence near the Asawase F-line Community Centre at approximately 8:40 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

Details of the Attack

According to eyewitnesses, two men on a motorbike approached the chief’s home, and one—armed with an AK-47 rifle—opened fire, fatally wounding him before both fled the scene.

The brazen attack has shocked the community and prompted widespread calls for justice.

Government’s Response

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 23, Minister Muntaka condemned the murder as a “heinous act” and “a grievous wound to the peace and security of the country.”

“I want to assure the family and the people of Ghana that our security agencies are fully committed to ensuring that the perpetrators of this crime are swiftly apprehended and made to face the full rigours of the law,” Muntaka stated.

He further urged calm and cooperation from residents of Asawase and surrounding areas, emphasizing the importance of public assistance in ongoing investigations.

Commitment to Rule of Law

Muntaka reaffirmed the Ministry of Interior’s resolve to uphold law and order, adding:

“We remain resolute in protecting every citizen and upholding the rule of law. I call on all residents… to remain calm and cooperate with the security agencies.”

Condolences Extended

The Minister extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the Kusasi community in the Ashanti Region, and the traditional leadership of the Kusaug area, assuring them of the government’s support in these trying times.

The killing adds to growing national concern over targeted violence and its potential to inflame tensions in already sensitive regions.
