Mahama Refers Electoral Violence Report to Attorney General for Legal Action

President John Dramani Mahama has submitted a detailed report on electoral violence from Ghana’s 2020 and 2024 general elections to the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, for legal review and appropriate action.

The report, compiled by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, highlights violent incidents that marred both elections, including shootings, confrontations between political party supporters, and clashes with security forces.

Fatalities and Injuries Recorded

  • 2020 Elections: 8 deaths reported
  • 2024 Elections: 3 deaths confirmed
These fatalities occurred in various constituencies and sparked public outrage, with civil society organisations, election observers, and victims’ families demanding justice.

Presidential Directive for Accountability

Upon assuming office, President Mahama tasked the IGP to compile the report in response to growing calls for accountability over election-related violence.
His directive aligns with his campaign promise to uphold justice, electoral reform, and non-partisanship in national security operations.

The report’s submission to the Attorney General’s Office marks the next step toward:

  • Possible prosecutions
  • Compensation for victims
  • Institutional reforms in election security management

Rule of Law & Institutional Strengthening

A statement from the Presidency emphasized that this action is part of broader efforts to:

  • Reinforce Ghana’s democratic values
  • Prevent future political violence
  • Restore public confidence in the electoral process and security institutions

Legal experts expect Dr. Ayine to assess potential breaches of law, recommend prosecution where applicable, and advise on mechanisms to strengthen security coordination during elections.
