Minister Sam George rejects MultiChoice Ghana’s proposal, insists on DStv price reduction

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has strongly rejected a proposal by MultiChoice Ghana, describing the company’s response to calls for a reduction in DStv subscription fees as “illogical” and disconnected from the concerns of Ghanaian consumers.
The Minister’s comments come in reaction to a statement issued by MultiChoice Ghana on Sunday, August 3, and signed by Managing Director Alex Okyere, in which the company claimed it could not reduce subscription fees but was willing to halt the repatriation of revenue to its parent company as a gesture of good faith.
But in a firm response posted on Facebook the same day, Mr. George dismissed the offer, stating:
“They proposed that I allow them to maintain the collection of the exorbitant bouquet prices as they stand, but order them not to send the revenue to their headquarters. In all honesty, that offer lacks any logic in my estimation.”
He stressed that the core of the issue is pricing, not where the money ends up.
“The essence of my action is to see Ghanaians pay a fair price for the services offered. How does this proposal solve the real issue?” he added.
Mr. George also accused the company of exploiting Ghanaian subscribers, pointing out that MultiChoice reversed price hikes in Nigeria following pressure from Nigerian authorities, yet proceeded with a 15% increase in Ghana in April 2025, despite favourable economic indicators such as a stronger cedi and declining inflation and fuel prices.
“For far too long, corporations have fleeced the Ghanaian people. There has been a RESET and it demands a new style of public service that is fiercely protective of the Ghanaian people,” he said.
While expressing sympathy for Ghanaian employees of DStv, he encouraged them to stand with the public in advocating for fair pricing.
Mr. George reaffirmed his willingness to engage in dialogue but emphasized that such talks must be focused solely on price reduction.
“I remain open to ‘constructive engagements’ that are centred on PRICE REDUCTION. Anything else is tangential and of no consequence.”
The dispute has stirred widespread public interest, with many calling for greater scrutiny of pay-TV pricing models and the value of service delivery in Ghana.
