Thousands attend emotional candlelight vigil for Daddy Lumba at Independence Square

Thousands of mourners gathered at Independence Square in Accra on Saturday night, August 2, to honour the memory of the late highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, widely known as Daddy Lumba, during a moving candlelight vigil.
The event drew fans, fellow musicians, dignitaries, and members of the public who came together in solemn remembrance of a musical icon whose death has left the nation in mourning. Clad predominantly in black, participants held lit candles, sang along to some of his greatest hits, and shared heartfelt reflections on his enduring influence.

The vigil formed part of a series of events being held to celebrate the life and legacy of one of Ghana’s most iconic and beloved musicians, whose career spanned over four decades.
Speakers at the vigil hailed Daddy Lumba as a cultural pillar, praising his contribution to the development of Ghanaian highlife music. His artistry and lyrical themes—often touching on love, life, faith, and social issues—continue to resonate with generations.
“His songs were the soundtrack to our lives,” one speaker noted. “Daddy Lumba was more than a musician; he was a voice for the people.”
The vigil followed earlier visits from notable individuals and institutions, including Citi FM and Channel One TV, who visited the family to express their condolences.
Tributes continue to pour in from across Ghana and beyond, with many highlighting his role in shaping the modern highlife genre. Among his celebrated songs are Yemfa Odo, Sika Asem, Mepaebo, Ɛyɛ N’adom, Makra Mo, and Yɛne Wo Sere Kwa.
Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025, after a brief illness. His funeral arrangements are yet to be officially announced, but a book of condolence has been opened at his East Legon residence.
