Private legal practitioner and NDC Constituency Secretary, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has emerged victorious in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries for the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
In the closely contested election held on Monday, August 4, 2025, Mr. Baidoo polled 380 votes, narrowly beating Erasmus Ali Korney, popularly known as Asanka, who secured 366 votes. Former MP and 2024 parliamentary candidate Henry Yiadom Boakye placed third with 226 votes.
Out of 1,075 eligible voters, 975 cast their ballots, with three ballots rejected.
Mr. Baidoo, who once served as legal counsel to Henry Yiadom Boakye in a previous election petition, will now face the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) acclaimed candidate, Solomon Asumadu, in the September 2 by-election.
The by-election has been necessitated by the death of sitting MP Ernest Kumi on July 7, 2025, after a short illness. With both the NDC and NPP fielding strong candidates, the race for Akwatia is expected to be one of the most fiercely contested political battles ahead of the 2026 general elections.
