NDC holds Akwatia parliamentary primary today ahead of September by-election

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is holding its parliamentary primaries today, August 4, 2025, in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region to elect a candidate for the upcoming by-election.

This follows the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, on July 7 after a short illness. The Electoral Commission has set September 2 for the by-election to fill the vacant seat.

Three aspirants are vying for the NDC ticket:

  • Henry Boakye Yiadom, former MP and the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate
  • Erasmus Koney Ali, also known as Asanka, an assembly member and current presiding member
  • Bernard Bediako Baidoo, a lawyer

The winner of today’s internal contest will face off with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Solomon Asumadu, who has already been confirmed by his party.

The by-election is expected to be fiercely contested, as both major parties eye the opportunity to secure or reclaim the seat in what has become a politically strategic constituency.
