Eight Dead in Military Helicopter Crash Including Ministers and Senior Officials

Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region – August 6, 2025

Ghana is reeling from a devastating military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, killing eight prominent individuals, including government ministers, a parliamentarian, and senior military officers.

The list of confirmed fatalities, released by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, includes:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
  • Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – MP for Tamale Central and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman, National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate
  • Sergeant Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
  • Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

National Mourning Declared

In a somber statement, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah called the incident a “national tragedy of immense proportions.” He announced that all national flags are to be flown at half-mast in honour of the deceased, pending a full state funeral.

Investigations Underway

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, with military officials and aviation experts dispatched to the site. Initial reports suggest the aircraft may have encountered mechanical difficulties during a routine mission, but this has not been officially confirmed.

National Shock and Grief

Tributes are already pouring in from across the political spectrum and the international community. President John Dramani Mahama is expected to address the nation later today.

The crash has sent shockwaves throughout the country, not only for the loss of key figures in national governance and security but also for the tragic loss of experienced military personnel.
