President Mahama Makes Interim Ministerial Appointments After Tragic Helicopter Crash

Accra – August 7, 2025
President John Dramani Mahama has announced interim ministerial appointments to fill the leadership vacuum left by the tragic deaths of two cabinet ministers in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
According to a statement from Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President has directed Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson to take on additional duties as Minister for Defence with immediate effect.
Similarly, Lands and Natural Resources Minister Hon. Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah has been appointed to act as Minister for Environment, Science and Technology.
The changes follow the sudden deaths of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence, and Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, who were among eight officials killed in the fatal crash on Wednesday, August 6 while en route to Obuasi for a government assignment.
Ensuring Stability Amid National Mourning
“These temporary appointments are aimed at ensuring continuity and stability in key sectors of national governance as the nation grieves the loss of two distinguished public servants,” the statement noted.
Currently, national flags are flying at half-mast across the country in honour of the deceased, while the Ghana Armed Forces, in collaboration with relevant state agencies, have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the crash.
President Mahama is expected to lead a national tribute ceremony in the coming days as preparations begin for the state funerals of the fallen ministers and their colleagues.
