President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish an Education Fund to support the children of those who died in the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking during the third-day funeral rites (Adua) of Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed on Tuesday, August 12, the President revealed that the fund will be officially launched during the state funeral on Friday, August 15.
“There will be a state funeral on Friday, 15th August. At the funeral, we will announce some programmes for creating a fund that will assist with the education of the children. Friday, I will announce the details of that, so that people who want to contribute to the future of the children they have left behind will have the opportunity to do so. I believe that Allah will have mercy on him, forgive him for all his sins, and accept him,” President Mahama said.
The initiative follows the tragic crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District, which claimed eight lives, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong.
Also killed were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
On Sunday, August 10, mourners gathered to pay their final respects to Dr. Murtala Muhammed and Muniru Mohammed. The upcoming state funeral at the Black Star Square will honour all the victims and serve as the platform for the official unveiling of the Education Fund.
