NPP’s Decision to Sit Out Tamale Central By-Election Is Pragmatic – Dr. Adomako Kissi

Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dr. Adomako Kissi, has defended the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision not to contest the upcoming Tamale Central by-election, describing it as a strategic and pragmatic choice rather than political generosity.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, August 12, Dr. Kissi explained that the party’s internal assessment showed unfavourable electoral prospects in the constituency, prompting a redirection of resources to areas with a higher chance of victory.
“This is not necessarily about the death. The numbers for Tamale Central are not favourable, and all the hustle related to a by-election won’t be worth it,” he said. “From history, this has been an NDC stronghold and will undoubtedly remain so. You choose your battles, and the NPP has chosen theirs. This is not a favour but a pragmatic decision — the future matters more.”
The NPP formally announced its decision not to field a candidate following the death of Tamale Central MP, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Muhammed, in the August 6 military helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region.
Dr. Murtala Muhammed was among eight people who lost their lives in the incident. His passing has triggered a by-election in accordance with Article 112(5) of Ghana’s Constitution.
According to a statement signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the decision was reached at a National Steering Committee meeting on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the party’s national headquarters.
