The Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs has called on the government to intensify the fight against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, in memory of the eight individuals who lost their lives in the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash.
The victims were en route to Obuasi to participate in an anti-galamsey programme when their military aircraft crashed. Speaking after signing the book of condolence at the Defence Ministry, the House’s President, Nii Odaifio Welentse III, stressed that failing to decisively tackle the menace would render their sacrifice meaningless.
“If we cannot deal with this holistically, once and for all, then these gallant soldiers died for nothing. We should all rise and deal with galamsey,” he said.
The deceased were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed (MP), Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — all recognised for their distinguished service to Ghana.
Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna were laid to rest on Sunday, August 10, while the remaining victims will be buried on Friday, August 15, 2025.
