A daring armed robbery attempt at the MRB Rural Bank in Winneba was foiled in the early hours of Friday, August 15, 2025, following a swift and coordinated response by the police.
According to a preliminary police report, the bank’s security alarm was triggered around 1:00 AM, drawing the attention of a nearby patrol team. When officers arrived at the scene, they came under immediate gunfire from suspected robbers attempting to break into the bank’s vault.
A brief exchange of fire ensued, after which the assailants fled, abandoning a pump-action shotgun, an empty cartridge, and burglary tools believed to have been intended for the heist. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded.
Investigation Underway
A team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) of the CID Headquarters in Accra, led by ASP James Atampugri, was dispatched to support local police in the investigation. Initial findings suggest that at least five armed men were involved in the attempted robbery.
Police say the foiled operation bears similarities to recent rural bank robbery incidents across the country, fueling suspicions that the same criminal network may be behind the attack.
Intelligence gathered so far indicates the suspects may be hiding in Kumasi, where surveillance teams from the AARU are already deployed to track and dismantle the gang.
Public Vigilance
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities that may help in apprehending the criminals.
Authorities say the incident underscores the need for heightened security at rural financial institutions, which have become recurring targets for armed groups.
