Controller and Accountant General Confirms GH¢809m Payment for Pokuase–Nsawam Highway Project

The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, has disclosed that a total of GH¢809 million has been paid to the contractor working on the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway as of August 4, 2025.

His confirmation comes as contractors returned to site to resume work on the heavily trafficked stretch, bringing relief to commuters who have endured weeks of severe gridlock.

The resumption follows a one-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which had threatened to suspend operations if the government failed to get the contractor back on site by Wednesday, August 20.

Speaking on Peace FM on Monday, August 18, Mr. Agyei explained that government had fully met its financial commitments towards the project.

“On July 24, we gave part payment; on July 30, another tranche; and on August 4, the final payment. Altogether, we have honoured the request in full, amounting to about GH¢809 million,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Amasaman, Sedem Afenyo, has welcomed the development, expressing confidence that work will now progress without further delays.

“Some weeks back, we met with the engineer and the three MCEs affected by this road and were assured that action would be taken. I want to believe the payments have now been made, and with the assurances I’ve received, I hope we do not see the work stalled again,” he told Citi News.
