DRIP Coordinator Urges GRNMA to Prioritize Welfare Over Ridge Hospital Assault Controversy

National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has called on the leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) to shift focus from the ongoing Ridge Hospital assault controversy and instead advocate more vigorously for the welfare and working conditions of their members.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, August 28, Mr. Vanderpuye expressed concern over how the association’s top executives—particularly the General Secretary, Dr. David Tenkorang Twum—have handled the matter publicly. He described their statements as “horribly unprofessional” and warned that such communication risks compromising the collective interests of nurses and midwives nationwide.
“I believe the GRNMA has escalated the situation unnecessarily. The comments made by the president and secretary were extremely unprofessional. As leaders, they should always place the association’s interest above personal sentiments,” Mr. Vanderpuye emphasized.
He urged the GRNMA to use the incident as an opportunity to intensify calls for improved healthcare infrastructure, fair conditions of service, and robust protections for frontline health workers—rather than fueling public tension.
His remarks followed the release of a report by a special committee commissioned by the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to investigate the alleged August 18 assault on nurse Rejoice Tsotso Bortei at Ridge Hospital.
According to the findings, presented on Wednesday, August 27 by committee chair Dr. Lawrence Ofori-Boad, medical assessments found no evidence of a shoulder dislocation or fracture, contrary to initial claims. The nurse was diagnosed with soft tissue contusions, prescribed pain medication, and placed under psychological care.
The committee’s report, coupled with widely circulated footage of the altercation involving the patient’s relatives and emergency department staff, sparked public debate on workplace safety for health professionals.
Health Minister Akandoh has since appealed for calm, assuring health workers that the Ministry is fully committed to building a safer and more supportive environment for all healthcare personnel across the country.
