GAF Warns Mpatuam Residents Against Confronting Soldiers

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has cautioned residents of Mpatuam and surrounding mining communities against arming themselves in confrontations with the military following violent clashes at the Asanko Gold Ghana Limited concession.

The disturbances, which erupted between September 8 and 9, 2025, left two people dead, including Samuel Danquah, the Assembly Member for Manso Aboabo, and resulted in the destruction of 14 pieces of heavy-duty mining equipment.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 10, the military confirmed that it had stationed personnel at the concession since July 2025 to curb illegal mining and safeguard lives and property after consultations with security councils, community leaders, and representatives of the miners.

According to the GAF, the clashes began when troops on patrol confronted illegal miners in restricted zones. The miners fled but later alleged that one had drowned while escaping. The next day, protesters returned with the deceased’s body, sparking further violence that escalated into the burning of excavators, tipper trucks, bulldozers, and drilling machines.

“The situation was brought under control after reinforcements and firing of warning shots,” the statement noted.

The Armed Forces expressed condolences to the bereaved families but issued a stern warning:
“The military wishes to caution the people of Mpatuam and all others in mining communities to desist from arming themselves to confront the Ghana Armed Forces.”

It urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and avoid actions that could undermine national peace and security.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into the clashes and the destruction of property.
