The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has donated GH₵5 million and five Toyota Hilux pickups to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) to strengthen the fight against illegal mining.
The presentation was made by GoldBod CEO, Sammy Gyamfi Esq., on Monday, September 15, 2025, at the organisation’s Accra headquarters.
Mr. Gyamfi reaffirmed GoldBod’s commitment to responsible and sustainable mining, stressing that while the board supports legal mining operations, it stands firmly behind NAIMOS in cracking down on illegal miners whose activities devastate the environment.
“The Ghana Gold Board wants to buy more gold to generate foreign exchange for the country, but the gold we buy must be mined responsibly to create better value and protect our environment. Our collective survival depends on the success of the fight against illegal mining, and we cannot afford to fail,” he stated.
He also disclosed that GoldBod will roll out value-chain traceability initiatives in the gold trade and help formalise the small-scale mining sector. The board further plans to support the reclamation of 1,000 hectares of destroyed forest reserves and back the cooperative mining programme led by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
Receiving the donation, Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah commended GoldBod, describing the gesture as timely and a significant boost to ongoing efforts to eliminate galamsey.
