Mahama: ECOWAS Engaging Sahel Alliance to Safeguard Regional Security

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is maintaining dialogue with the three Sahelian nations—Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—that recently left the bloc to establish the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
Speaking at the Jubilee House on Friday, September 19, 2025, during a courtesy call by Germany’s newly appointed Ambassador to Ghana, President Mahama emphasized that regional unity is essential to tackling West Africa’s security and development challenges.
He cautioned that disunity could worsen insecurity and allow terrorism to spread further across the subregion.
“The AES countries have broken away from ECOWAS, but we are engaged in continuous dialogue because we believe the difficulties they face are not theirs alone. If we do not show solidarity, the threat could easily spill over into the rest of the region,” he said.
President Mahama also commended Germany’s collaboration with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), noting its critical role in training and strategic support for countering violent extremism.
Germany’s Ambassador, Frederick Landshoft, lauded Mahama’s leadership and Ghana’s achievements, highlighting the country’s improving macroeconomy and international recognition. He reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Ghana in areas of security, democracy, and economic growth, while celebrating 50 years of bilateral partnership.
