President Mahama to Lead Ghana’s Delegation to 80th UN General Assembly

President John Dramani Mahama will head Ghana’s delegation to the high-level week of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), scheduled for 22nd to 30th September 2025 in New York, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced.

The session, being held under the global theme “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” will feature Ghana in a prominent role.

In line with UN tradition, President Mahama will deliver Ghana’s national statement during the General Debate on Thursday, 25th September, where he will appear as the 12th speaker of the day. His address will be historic, making him the first Ghanaian President to return to the UNGA podium after an eight-year interval.

As outlined by Minister Ablakwa during the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, September 15, the President’s visit will include several high-level meetings and strategic side events showcasing Ghana’s leadership on African and global issues.

On 24th September, in his capacity as African Union (AU) Champion for African Financial Institutions, President Mahama will host a major side event on Africa’s Financial Sovereignty. The gathering will bring together Heads of State, Finance Ministers, AU representatives, and other partners to discuss Africa’s financial independence, progress on AU Financial Institutions, and the need for global financial reforms.

On 25th September, Ghana will also co-host a high-level side event with Senegal on the African Union’s campaign for Reparatory Justice for Africans and people of African descent. The initiative underscores Ghana’s leading role in advancing reparative justice and addressing historical injustices at the global level.

Beyond these events, President Mahama is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with world leaders on issues including peace, climate change, development cooperation, and economic partnerships.

The delegation’s participation in the 80th UNGA highlights Ghana’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism, global peace, and Africa’s development agenda.
