The North East Regional Police Command, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), has seized 1,195 boxes of Tramadol Hydrochloride 120mg, popularly known as “Red”, in a major anti-narcotics operation at Gbintiri, near Nalerigu.
The operation, carried out on Thursday, September 18, 2025, led to the arrest of six suspects: Alhassan Braimah, Yakubu Muntaka, Abdulai Shakur, Mumuni Iddrisu, Mumuni Yakubu, and Moses Ayorik.
Two trucks—GR 1712-16 and AW 4417-14—suspected of transporting the illicit substances were intercepted. According to police, the vehicles had been loaded in Sankase, Togo, and were en route to Gbintiri.
A search revealed that 1,195 boxes of Tramadol were concealed among other goods in truck GR 1712-16. Police believe the consignment was destined for suspect Moses Ayorik, who was expected to deliver it to a recipient in Gushegu.
During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted their involvement in the smuggling attempt.
DSP Robert Anabik Anmain, Public Affairs Officer of the North East Regional Command, confirmed that all six suspects are in custody and cooperating with investigators. He added that efforts are underway to track down other accomplices believed to be part of the smuggling syndicate.
The police warned that the influx of illicit drugs poses a grave threat to public health and security, especially in northern Ghana, and reiterated their commitment to dismantling such trafficking networks.
