President Mahama to Launch “The Accra Reset” at UNGA 80

President John Dramani Mahama will unveil a new global initiative, “The Accra Reset”, during a high-level event at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

The Accra Reset seeks to redefine global health and development frameworks, responding to what President Mahama describes as outdated systems that are failing to meet current challenges.

As part of the launch, the President will announce the creation of a Global Presidential Council, composed of leaders from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and other regions. This council will provide the political leadership needed to drive the Reset’s vision. Additionally, a High-Level Advisory Panel made up of experts in health, finance, business, and innovation will guide the technical and strategic direction of the initiative.

The concept builds on recommendations from the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit held in Accra in August 2025, where leaders emphasized the urgent need for stronger partnerships and innovative approaches to global problem-solving, particularly in health systems that remain vulnerable during crises.

President Mahama stressed that with most Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) off track, “the world cannot continue with the same strategies.” He argued that bold reforms are needed to ensure resilience in the face of future global shocks.

Presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the initiative demonstrates Ghana’s leadership on the world stage and underscores Africa’s capacity to shape bold, transformative ideas for global progress.

The launch is expected to bring together world leaders, international organisations, philanthropists, business executives, and civil society groups, all united to reimagine development cooperation and health security in an increasingly uncertain world.
