Peter Mutharika Takes Strong Lead in Malawi Presidential Race

Malawi’s former President Peter Mutharika has taken a commanding lead in the country’s ongoing presidential election, with provisional results showing him ahead in two-thirds of districts counted so far.

The 85-year-old candidate has secured around 66% of the valid votes, while his closest rival, incumbent Lazarus Chakwera, 70, trails with approximately 24%.

In a surprising twist, Mutharika has made gains in regions traditionally seen as Chakwera strongholds, including the capital Lilongwe and Nkhotakota.

Possibility of a Run-off

Despite the gap, Chakwera’s camp remains optimistic. They believe results from districts yet to be declared — particularly rural areas around Lilongwe and Dedza — could boost his numbers significantly, possibly forcing a run-off election.

With 12 districts still to declare results, at least two with large voter populations, the race is not yet concluded. However, Mutharika is also expected to perform well in some of the remaining districts.

Results Withheld and Irregularities Alleged

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has withheld results from two districts while verifying their accuracy, stressing its commitment to transparency, accuracy, and credibility. The commission has promised thorough checks of tally sheets, mindful of the 2019 election that was annulled due to irregularities.

Meanwhile, Chakwera’s party has alleged “serious anomalies” and demanded a physical audit of results, although it has not provided details.

Police have confirmed the arrest of eight data entry clerks accused of attempting to manipulate election results, adding to tensions around the vote.

Background

Mutharika, who lost to Chakwera in the 2020 re-run election, is seeking a return to power. His rival has faced growing criticism during his presidency, with Malawi grappling with high inflation, food and fuel shortages, and persistent power cuts.

The final official results are expected to be announced by Wednesday, leaving Malawians anxiously awaiting clarity on the nation’s political future.
