The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Cape Coast (UCC) chapter, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to reverse its sanctions against the university.
GTEC recently suspended all government support and services to UCC, further labelling the institution as “non-existent” on its official portal. The sanctions follow alleged non-compliance with directives regarding the tenure of Vice-Chancellor Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong.
Responding to the development, UTAG-UCC Secretary, Dr. Isaac Boabeng, described the Commission’s actions as “unlawful, unjustifiable, and a direct attack on the dignity and livelihoods of staff.”
He further warned that any attempt to withhold salaries as part of the sanctions would be both “criminal and reckless.”
Dr. Boabeng stressed that GTEC must withdraw its directive and issue a formal apology by Friday, or face mass protests from university staff.
“If GTEC fails to act, we will march to Accra. They should come and lock the University of Cape Coast and take the keys to Accra. GTEC and Professor Okloh must understand that there are laws in this country,” he declared.
The ultimatum raises tensions between the regulatory body and the university community, with fears that the impasse could disrupt academic activities if left unresolved.
