The Sogakope Area Chapter of the Church of Pentecost has rolled out a groundbreaking initiative to promote road safety and discipline among commercial motorbike riders (okada riders) in the Volta Region.
The programme, dubbed “Ministry to Okada Riders,” is the first of its kind by a church in the region and seeks to address the safety and security challenges facing the over 3.5 million okada riders nationwide, while supporting government efforts to regulate their activities.
Launch and Procession
The launch began with a 30-minute procession of okada riders through Sogakope before a grand ceremony that brought together stakeholders, including officials from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), and the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC).

Stakeholders Speak
- Pastor Edward Brains Agidi-Quarshie, Sogakope Area Head of the Church of Pentecost, said the initiative reflects the church’s mission of responding to community needs and promoting social responsibility.
- Municipal Chief Executive, Victoria Dzeklo, commended riders for their role in reducing crime but urged them to remain security-conscious.
- ASP Victor Mensah Sekey, Tongu Divisional MTTD Commander, cautioned against reckless riding and pledged intensified education and enforcement.
- Michael Kofi Owusu, National President of the Okada Riders’ Association, lauded the church’s intervention and appealed to the DVLA to make licensing more affordable and transparent to prevent extortion.
Registration Drive
So far, about 3,000 riders have been registered across parts of the Volta Region as part of a broader nationwide exercise under the initiative.
