Full details on how the busted notorious gang terrorised banks across Ghana

The Ghana Police Service has announced a major breakthrough in its fight against violent crime, dismantling a notorious criminal syndicate that carried out a string of armed robberies across several regions.

According to the Police, the syndicate, made up of about 15 individuals, has been linked to multiple bank robberies in the Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti regions over the past year.

Arrests and Shootouts

So far, 10 suspects have been arrested, while three others were killed in separate gun battles with police operatives. A manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects, including some identified masterminds.

The arrested suspects include:

  • Akwesi Agyei alias Cobra
  • Ibrahim Alhassan
  • Samuel Appiah alias Akwesi Mugu
  • Francis Acquah alias Preman
  • David Obuobi alias Wasty
  • Martin Akansina alias One Billion
  • Nana Yaw Frimpong alias Mystical
  • Kojo Atingawo alias Borga
  • Samuel Akwasi Gyan
  • Stephen Sey

Those killed in exchanges with police include Kwaku Peprah alias X5, Natty Bongo, and Boosen Akwesi Appiah, while others such as Kwabena Owusu Ansah alias Kobby and Albert remain at large.

Banks Attacked

The gang’s coordinated operations targeted at least 12 financial institutions, including:

  • Adansi Rural Bank, Fomena (10 April 2025)
  • Lower Pra Rural Bank, Takoradi Inchaban (24 April 2025)
  • Asokore Rural Bank, Kumasi (18 May 2025)
  • Ahafo Kukom Community Bank (30 May 2025)
  • Nnwabiagya Rural Bank, Offinso (10 July 2025)
  • Bosomtwi Rural Bank, Edwenase (18 July 2025)
  • Kakum Rural Bank, Elmina (4 August 2025)
  • MRB Bank, Winneba (15 August 2025)
  • South Birim Rural Bank, Akim Asene (16 August 2025)
  • Ecobank, Kenyasi (8 September 2025)
  • St. Martin De Pores Co-Op Credit Union, Atonsu Monaco (14 September 2025)

In each case, the robbers used industrial cutting machines to break into vaults after overpowering security guards and seizing weapons.

Exhibits Recovered

Police recovered a large cache of arms, cash, and stolen property, including:

  • 3 AK-47 rifles (two stolen from police officers at Ecobank Kenyasi, one from a murdered officer at Tepa)
  • 7 pump action guns, 96 rounds of ammunition
  • 4 pistols
  • Over GH¢18,800 in cash, alongside foreign currencies
  • 6 vehicles and 4 motorbikes
  • Several mobile phones and jewellery

Link to Police Killing

Investigators confirmed that one of the AK-47s retrieved was the service weapon of G/Cpl. Francis Adu Yaw, who was killed by armed robbers on the Bibiani-Goaso Highway in November 2024. This connects the gang to that high-profile murder.

Ongoing Investigations

Some suspects have already confessed during interrogation, while others were identified by victims during a police identification parade. The Police say all arrested suspects will be put before court, while efforts continue to track down those still on the run.

IGP Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno praised the intelligence-led operation, assuring the public that the Police remain committed to “making life uncomfortable for criminal elements” until they are brought to justice.
