NIA Clarifies Ghana Card Validity After Executive Secretary’s Remarks Spark Debate

The Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Wisdom Kwaku Deku, has sparked public debate following comments he made on TV3’s Hot Issues regarding the validity period of the Ghana Card.
During the interview, Mr. Deku hinted that future reviews could potentially shorten the validity period of the card in line with technological advancements and evolving national needs. His comments were widely interpreted as confirmation that the validity period would be reduced from the current ten (10) years to five (5).
NIA Issues Clarification
In response to the public concerns, the NIA released a statement firmly denying any such policy change. The authority stressed that the Ghana Card remains valid for ten years, and no official proposal has been made to alter this duration.
The NIA described the circulating claims as a misrepresentation of Mr. Deku’s remarks, urging the public to disregard them.
Public Confusion
The apparent contradiction between Mr. Deku’s televised remarks and the NIA’s official statement has, however, left many Ghanaians seeking further clarity on the future of the Ghana Card.
