Former NLA Boss Defends Good Causes Foundation Spending Amid Criticism

The former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) has rejected allegations that funds meant for the poor and vulnerable under the Authority’s Good Causes Foundation were squandered on “glamorous events and questionable enterprises.”

In a statement responding to a recent Fourth Estate publication, the former NLA chief described the report as “lopsided,” arguing that it overlooked the “life-saving projects and donations” delivered under his leadership.

Community and Social Impact

The Good Causes Foundation, launched in October 2021, was designed to drive NLA’s corporate social responsibility in health, education, youth and sports development, and arts and culture.

According to the statement, initiatives during his tenure included:

  • Construction of toilet facilities and mechanised boreholes in all 16 regions.
  • Refurbishment of hospitals and schools nationwide.
  • Scholarships for needy students.
  • Medical outreach programmes benefiting thousands.
  • Establishment of a neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Ghana Hospital.
  • Donation of incubators to health facilities.
  • Support for sports clubs like Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
  • Sponsorship of major cultural festivals such as Hogbetsotso and Homowo.

“Glamorous Events” and Revenue Growth

On the issue of high-profile sponsorships, the former NLA boss admitted the Authority backed events including the EMY Awards, Ghana Club 100 Awards, and the Ghana CEO Summit. However, he maintained these were strategic marketing initiatives, which helped boost the Caritas Lottery Platform’s revenue from GH¢100,000 in 2021 to over GH¢11 million by 2024.

He stressed that less than 5% of total funds went into such sponsorships, while about 95% directly financed community projects.

“It is a falsehood to suggest that awards were bought. The few I received were in recognition of the collective efforts of management and staff,” he clarified.

International Endorsements

The statement further cited endorsements from the World Lottery Association and commendations from international figures such as former Maltese President Dr. George Vella as proof of the Foundation’s credibility.

Concluding his defence, the former NLA boss stated:
“During my tenure, I worked diligently, served with integrity, and left the NLA in a better financial and operational state than I found it.”
