Paul Adom-Otchere Warns 90% of Ghana’s TV and Radio Stations Are Operating at a Loss

Former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Paul Adom-Otchere, has raised concerns over the financial survival of Ghana’s television and radio industry, warning that 90% of stations are operating at a loss due to dwindling traditional advertising revenue.
Speaking at the Broadcasting at the Crossroads forum organised by the Africa Media Bureau at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Friday, September 26, Adom-Otchere stressed that the sector urgently needs new revenue models to avoid collapse.
📉 Advertising Decline, Digital Shift
“Right now in Ghana, 90% of TV and radio stations are running at a loss because advertising is not working anymore,” he said.
He explained that many broadcasters are shifting to digital platforms such as YouTube, where they are able to monetise their content more effectively.
“The only way to redeem this situation is to have a way in which content can be monetised so that people can earn money from their content. Radio and TV stations are opening YouTube channels and putting their content there because that is how they get money,” he noted.
⚠️ Call for National Action
Adom-Otchere urged a national conversation involving the National Communications Authority (NCA) and other key stakeholders to develop strategies that support local content monetisation through policy and infrastructure.
“It is important that this conversation about monetising local content through the NCA infrastructure is taken very seriously. Otherwise, a lot of these stations are grounding to a halt, and the danger is that they will be overtaken by politicians and politics,” he cautioned.
Without urgent intervention, he warned, Ghana risks losing independent media houses to closure or political control.
