Ghana has achieved a major diplomatic breakthrough as the United States has lifted the visa restrictions it imposed on the country in July 2025.
The reversal means Ghanaians are now eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas, along with other enhanced consular privileges.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post on Friday, September 26, 2025. He disclosed that the decision was officially communicated to him by the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during a bilateral meeting with Ghana’s delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“Big win for Ghana! The US visa restrictions imposed on Ghana have been reversed. Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges,” Ablakwa revealed.
Background
In July 2025, the U.S. government under the Trump Administration had limited Ghanaian travelers to a maximum of three-month single-entry visas, citing long-standing concerns over visa overstays, particularly among Ghanaian students.
Following months of high-level diplomatic negotiations between Accra and Washington, the restrictions have now been removed — a development seen as a significant sign of strengthened Ghana–U.S. relations.
Observers say the decision reflects growing confidence between the two nations and could boost opportunities in education, business, tourism, and diaspora engagement.
